General Assistance

The General Assistance program provides financial assistance to Chebeague residents who are having difficulty meeting basic needs such as housing, utilities and food. The program is funded by local property taxes with a 50 percent reimbursement from the state. Applicants should call the Chebeague Town Office at 846-3148 to make an appointment.
Each town has a General Assistance Program to help people in emergencies. You may be eligible even if you work or receive other benefits such as: food stamps, veterans' benefits, or Social Security income. To request General Assistance, contact your town office. Your application must be accepted for review. You may be turned down for help if you do not meet the guidelines for the program. The application is private and confidential. If you have problems concerning General Assistance, please call 1-800-442-6003.

If you are in immediate need and you think the
municipality has violated the state law with regard to your
request for assistance, you may call the Department of
Human Services to complain. The Department’s hot-line
number is 1-800-442-6003.
